Simply get the cables in DEEP and rebuild using mortar, bits of block, half bricks and any old hardcore you can find.

Mortar is stringer than the old stuff would have been.

Make it a 'strong point' rather than a weak point.

Then skim the bugger to make it look pretty later.

No you ain't. As long as you have a couple of inches to key mortar to, just rebuild it after pushing the cables into the cavity. Any old s**te will do. If you are bothered about the vertical shear line smash a few inches either side here and there and bridge with a brick keyed into the walls.

Bet it will be stronger than the original.
