Every year at about this time, we get a large number of power interruptions, ranging from 1 second to a minute or so. I've lodged a complaint with Northern Powergrid and had a reply from their customer care team. A lot of their letter explains about auto-recloser circuit-breakers and why they are necessary, and describes typical "it could be" reasons for them tripping.
But apparently they have investigated and found that in this specific case it is due to "livestock rubbing themselves against poles causing equipment [auto-reclosers, I presume] to operate".
I *presume* it's HV (11 or 33 kV) lines that are being described, as opposed to 240 V lines running along a street or to farms etc. In the past, when the explanation has been overhanging tree branches, a fault engineer came to investigate and found it was HV lines that were affected. The reference to rerouting supplies suggests switching out one HV feed and switching in another redundant one to our village's substation(s).
Would a bird (eg a large enough one to have a wingspan that can short phases or phase to earth) draw enough current to trip a circuit breaker, or would the current be negligible compared with the normal supply current? And what "windbourne debris" could cause shorts, other than tree branches which would remain in one place and so could be seen by a line survey?
I presume that when lengths of HV cable are joined, with one cable ending at an insulator on one side of the pole and the continuation ending at an insulator on the other side, the length of the loop which joins them is made short enough that even if it sways in the wind (or is jostled by an animal) it gets nowhere near touching anything grounded or another similar loop for another phase.
Is the explanation given remotely plausible or is it bull (livestock) s*it?
