4 bits per disk for the partitions, so 65536 disks per controller type!

In that pathological case, I'd just clone the device driver with a new major device number and a new node name...!
I think patching the kernel to do whatever was needed would not be a massive exercise..
I still get a kick out of being in a virtual windows machine, seeing the underlying linux machine as a virtual disk in that, and connecting to an NFS mounted server on that..from windows.
Best of all I achieved a first yesterday. I set up a firewalled pipe from my new virtual server in Maidenhead, to the network equipped laserjet here, and was able to print directly from a print queue in maidenhead to the laser printer on my desk here..
Not bad for a domestic broadband link and a cheap router..

Just been in Thailand for a week ... and the news showed all the HDD manufacturing facilities totally flooded out ... Western Digitla, Samsung etc. They said that Thai production of HDD is normally 200,000 per week per factory, and they predict a 20 million unit shortfall for next 6 months.
Not the ideal tiem toi be buying HDD's
