There are lots of systems using heavier guage copper than is used domestically.
Gas in plastic? I've been told that's very naughty.
All underground gas pipework in the UK is plastic now. (yellow).

My point is you're not meant to use plastic for gas in your house, but it's ok underground?
BSP threads are available in both taper and parallel. The taper ones seal on the threads, while the parallel ones use a sealing washer - often these days a Dowty washer or similar, although I have seen OLD specifications for "greased leather" washers!

I've got a BSP male to male adaptor here which is straight and has no washer. It sealed perfectly with no PTFE tape.
Just type pipe union into a search engine, it is a fitting designed to be undone without turning the pipe.
There are two unions in that picture which allow you to get things undone.
And probably more unions just outside the picture.
