What SD card readers do you use?

THe windows one is built into the machine, but I have an SD/MiniSD-> USB adapter for the Linux box.

Should have added that Linux Testdisk throws errors reading the blasted thing - both natively and from SystemRescue.

Have you tried to format them? Remember also they have a read/write switch. Brian

Yes - but there are errors about read/write ... in Linux parted is grumbling about an unrecognised label, and barfs trying to create a new one.

R/W switch is set to write.

I use the ones in my Macs, but sometimes they don;t always work first time and I find I nned to insert them with more force than I would have expected to use and wiggle them a little (but not much) . I also have a USB stick that has a SD socket on the side I use this when I want to view the SD card on a TV.

hmm ... I shall have to check the machine specs. However, both boxes can tell me it's an 8G card. Just error reading/writing to it.

Windows does assign it a letter, but then refuses to admit it exists ?

I also got bit by the SDXC issue with a UHS1 Sandisk card that my tablet would see, but the phone and PC would not. That was finally sorted by choosing a different brand...

What was the size of the original card though? A non SDHC compatible card reader would be pretty old by now. Mind, class 10 could be SDXC... it's not, is it?

If that not the issue then perhaps one of the adapters is damaging the contacts or making them dirty?

We're not doubting that it's an HC card, what's at issue is whether your card reader is modern enough to read one of that size. Have you read other cards of this size? Older SD card readers had a 2 or 4Gb limit.

My Ricoh caplio gx8 will only take 2G SD cards. Unfortunately I forgot to get a few more when they were dirt cheap and no-one seems to make or sell them.

It could be that it was formatted using the XFAT filesystem, which older computers won't have a driver for. If you reformat the card as FAT32 with a third party formatting program then everything will be able to read it. The only downside is that the maximum size for individidual files under FAT32 is 4GB whereas XFAT lets you make much bigger files, which may be useful if making long videos.

Tx for all replies. Problem was indeed I had an SD*HC* card and my (old) Windows box inbuilt reader was SD-only, as was the (cheap) adapter I was using with my Linux box.

Hmm, I had a problem with th sd card in my true call the other day, it has now been replaced free, but it seems that it is possible to corrupt it in such a way that the software on the pc can still read it, but the truecall box won't look at it. Moral? copy the file off and only delete recordings using the box. Progres, pah! Brian

Not seeing disks, especially USB HDDs seems to be a big problem with Win 7 after some recent MS updates. Try going into disk management and setting a ccess permissions. Alternatively boot up into safe mode (not easy these da ys) and see if they are visible.
