leave it alone and there is no problem. If you take it to bits you will breathe the dust, which may harm you, likewise people around you may breathe some in. The only acceptable and legal way is to employ a firm that are licensed to dismantle and remove it. Local tips will not accept it anyway, so legal disposal would be a major problem for you.

Is it your home or commercial? Not sure if there is a difference for a DIY approach. Phone your local authority, they will be able to give a definitive answer in either case.

Also, See recent thread on "garage roof advice" here

google uk.d-i-y for asbestos etc for general info.

See the report at

it finds that chrysotile asbestos, which is the the sort usually used in asbestos cement panels is not very hazardous to health.

Wrong, local authority can advise on disposal approach.

Wrong, in many cases (mine takes it free), local authority can advise on disposal approach.

If its the normal white stuff, which is probably the case for asbestos cement garage roof panels, then you can DIY, although only some tips will accept it and you need to use special handling precautions. (i.e. respirator, double bagging, avoiding dust).

A good tip too is to dampen it with water before handling it;this reduces the tendency for any dust to move.

Wear gloves, dust mask and disposable overalls and chuck them away when you've finished.

Our local council tip will take domestic asbestos waste for safe disposal.

You may also be hit by a meteorite, the odds of the latter event are slightly greater than those of the former.

No it isn't

Yes they will

No it wouldn't.

Apart from the above you are right.

It might have to be a particular nominated one. A notice in our local tip said they wouldn't take Asbestos.

They also nowadays won't take fluorescent tubes. :(

Have you any suggestions for fluorerscent tubes. They say they won't take those any more. I have rather a lot of old fluorescent tubes :-((

I had in mind crunching them in paper sacks of Fullers Earth Pussy Poo Pellets and mxing the lot in a concrete mixer with portland cement, and casting them into blocks for ultimate disposal one at a time. ;-)

What do you think? Sell 'em as objet D'art to Tate Modern with some vague, but convoluted, reference to "Light Reborn"?

For years previously I've just broken them into the wheelie bin.
