Are Piezoelectric Gas Lighters really this crap?

The gas hob in the house we've moved to doesn't have auto-ignition so just bought SWMBO a piezoelectric gas lighter.

It sparks fine but no way can we get it to actually light the bloody gas.

Doesn't matter how high or low the gas is turned, how near or far the lighter is, you click away until you're blue in the face and all you get is the smell of unlit gas.

Are they really this crap?! Never had any problems lighting the same gas with a match!

No. It may be a badly designed one. Return it.

I used one for years and it was very effective at ignighting the gas. Yours is presumably faulty or badly designed. Can you see a blue spark when you squeeze it?

Is there gas?

Just to clarify - this is a pezio only one? It doesn't actually emit a gas flame? If so, then it will need filled up with gas.

Too much gas, not enough oxygen. Try lighting the hob without the gas going full pelt.

Sorry, re-read your post - you've tried that (control position). Anyway, lack of oxygen may still be the issue, fan some to the hob before lighting.

It's winter - the gas is cold and wet so it's more difficult to light.

There are a volume of absolute rubbish ones on the market in the last

6 months. Prices for them vary from one to three pounds. Out of ten one may work for a few weeks.

Yes, Piezo only. It doesn't have an internal gas reservoir.

I bought one for a couple of quid from somewhere, and it does as you describe.

What I do is put a pan on the hob, then stick the lighter beneath the pan. Works first time most times. Lighting the oven is trickier.

Best one I've come across looks something like this:

It makes one BIG spark instead of a lot of little useless ones.

cheers, Pete.
