Ansmann Powerline 5 LCD charger

I found the instructions for this device while having a major clear-out. These state:



ATTENTION Use only with NiCD/NiMH cells. Non rechargeable batteries or other types could cause an explosion! * Do not attempt to charge alkaline or other types of primary batteries [...]



Does this mean the charger could be unsafe to use with lithium batteries or do the instructions pre-date lithium ion?


Lithium AA cells are primary type not rechargeable. The common Lithium rechargeables are different sizes (18650/26650/21700/whatever).

14500 is a lithium size that matches AA. But lithium cells have different cell voltages (3-4 volts) so a NiCD/NiMH charger isn't suitable.

Rechargeable lithium cells/batteries must be charged by a lithium charger with approximately the right current rating for the cell capacity. The final charge stage (of three) uses precise measurement of cell voltage, which is different from other battery technologies.

I needed to build a charger into a device and rather than mess about myself, used one of the purpose-made lithium charging ICs.

Both. The instructions don't mention Li-ion cells because they pre-date their widespread introduction. However as the charger is only for NiCD/NiMH cells it is not suitable for Li-ion cells, either primary or rechargeable.

It sounds a bit like a fast charger. I don't have enough NiMH in the house, to comment on that aspect. The current level and the cell ratings I have here, seem lower than that.

Before plugging a cell in, check the charging instructions for the cell, and see if the current is in the right ballpark.

They have spelled out the chemistry, and that is a start. Only use such devices for the listed chemistry.

That particular charger, charges the cells in the four bays, one cell at a time. The charger is unlikely to detect the endpoint on the "Crown" items (detecting an endpoint at a 15mA charging current, would be pretty difficult). It may use a timer instead.
