Aluminium welding.

Went to the Classic Car show at the NEC yesterday and was most impressedwith one of those 'snake oil' products the small stands sell. It was amethod of welding aluminium.Basically, without even cleaning you heat with an ordinary blowtorch andapply a tiny amount of the special 'solder' to the joint - really justenough to 'tin' it. Then continue to apply heat and scrape the joint witha screwdriver etc. The resultant joint was as strong as the aluminium.It looked to require little skill - the guy certainly wasn't concentratinghard while he was doing it.Cost 20 quid for a metre of the 'solder' - but as I said you only actuallyuse a tiny amount per joint. It's about the same diameter as end feedsolder.I'll report again when I've tried it myself. But if it's as good as itlooked - an answer to a prayer.

I think I did buy some - but can't remember using it. I found welding ally with my MIG good enough for the simple stuff I needed.

ISTR it was more a form of brazing than welding anyway.

I have had a quick look but can't find any details (or the hardware, come to that. I've a feeling if it was brilliant, I'd have scanned the instructions and where to buy etc and saved them on here.

I forget the name, I also bought some on the grounds that it looked potentially useful, but couldn't make it work the one time I tried. (It was probably a difficult application, but I am pretty good at silver soldering ferrous metal).
