Right, got on order some 600x400mm ** 10mm calibrated ** black brazilian slate tiles for the kitchen. Apparently these are very regular in size. I know little about current tile adhesives.

if the floor is rigid screed use fast setting cement of GOOD quality.
5mm is a cinch. I built up to 40mm in one area. I used the scraps of cement at the end of the mix that was going off to lay a new bit of floor.. and then by the time the next lot was mixed, that was ready for the adhesive layer.It was more like bricklaying than tile laying.
DO set up guide strings before you start that are dead level,and use them to get the first central line laid accurately.
Then use a short level as well
Don't dot and dab floors. Take time to get the bed exactly the right height.
Unless you want to spend HOURS with brick acid absolutely wash every slate down with a sponge and fresh water TONS of times to get the cement off the face.And again when you grout. The final residue film of chalkiness WILL come off with brick acid or descaler.
