Seems to be building lots of things using these. The 4555 has a much lower quiescent current - handy when used on a car - but needs an external transistor to drive a auto relay. The standard 555 will drive one direct.
Is there a low current version with a high current driver built in?
The Maxim 7555 does 100mA is that enough?
I find it interesting that this chip is still being made when so many others are obsolete. I was building stuff with those back when I could see to ssolder. Brian
Last time I looked at analogue and basic transistors and chips, I was amazed to find there had been zero development since the 80's when I last used the things.
In retrospect I am not surprised. We had transistors of high linearity and noise figures approaching thermal. Only in UHF, power and digital have things 'moved on'. And LED technology. That's still a moving target.
The other part of the industry is 'mature'
That's the standard 7555 maximum, IIRC. The standard 555 does 200mA.
