3/8" BSF Brass threaded bar

Hello does anyone know where I might be able to purchase some of the above?

I do so miss my local ironmonger. He would have listened to my requirements, taken a few minutes thinking, then got his ladder climbed up and located the said bar or threaded bolts of the aforementioned size. And only charged me a few pence.

Unlike B+Q and Wickes. Threaded what mate? What size is that in mm's? What's BSF, never heard of that?

I'm not that old but I was taught BSF and Whitworth and had the various spanners to match.....maybe I am getting old...

Well, DIY sheds are self service. So you can't really expect a shelf filler to have the same sort of knowledge. But B&Q certainly stocks threaded rod.

Well, most UK car makers changed to unified after WW2, and then to metric in the '80s. Many things were standardised either across the world or EU. But you can still get BSF and Whitworth from specialists. However for most applications (except obviously as replacements) metric can be substituted.

That reminds me of a few years ago when I wanted an 8mm pipe-bending spring. I tried all the usual suspects - national plumbing suppliers, the sheds... nothing. Just for a laugh more than anything I called at my nearest "real" ironmonger's shop... On the way in I glanced upwards to some cardboard drawer/boxes above the counter and saw one marked "8mm bending springs" (or similar). It only cost a few coppers - much less than I'd spent in fuel driving around all over (although the firm was paying for that...!). The same ironmonger will still sell me real creosote, AND imperial-size twist drills (in 64ths from 1/16" to 1/2")(he does have metric ones as well!). His only problem is that he closes on Wednesday afternoons, which seems to be exactly when I want stuff...
