Has anyone put a 2 post vehicle lift, on bare soil?
Thin layer of soil, with clay sub soil. What might be needed in the way of a foundation please? Are the two posts braced against each other below ground, or are they entirely self supporting?
Just toying with the idea at the moment, to see what might be involved.
They're bolted to the ground. There is nothing below ground. Most of the loading is vertical, but there's also going to be a potentially substantial front-rear and outside-inwards loading, too.
The documentation I got with my Automotech said minimum 10" high-spec concrete, reinforced. The suppliers said that was overkill, and 6", preferably 7" was perfectly adequate. There's a certain dimension either side of the base plate, too. (I'm a bit shy on the outsides, but it's retained by blockwork, and I won't be using it to anywhere near the weight limits).
Bare soil? I don't think you'd catch me going anywhere near it, tbh.
TBH I think you would want a substantial concrete foundation for each leg. Possibly a concrete slab. The ones I have looked at are not braced tween legs in any way. Merely bolted to a foundation plate. I'm presuming this is a 2 post car lift. Nick.
For soil it'd need some form of outrigger frame, in the shape of an H. The internal left-right loading can be neutralised by the cross piece. The front-rear loading would be the main legs though for extra safety a, say, 15deg outward spread would be sensible.
From a paper viewpoint that seems easily achievable and perfectly usable. From a UK today perspective: think of the children, it's a H&S nightmare!
