1980s copper

About a week ago I noted a faint hiss coming from inside of my under-stairs cupboard. Over a few days the volume of the hissing increased.



I removed almost everything from under the stairs and piled it high in the hallway. Turning off the stop-c*ck inside and I could still hear the hissing. It stopped when the outside stop-c*ck was turned off. Cut and removed one floorboard under the stairs - underfloor space very wet with water running down inside of the foam pipe insulation.



Problem eventually found BUT under everything I had piled high in the hallway and required lifting much of the fitted carpet and underlay. The copper pipe had a pinhole leak which became much worse when I ran my hand along that section of pipe.



I replaced a 2 metre length of 22mm pipe and two 90 degree bends.



On close examination the copper pipe appears to have gone rusty! There appeared to be a a slither of different metal about 0.5mm by 2cm within the wall of the pipe and a thin layer of copper in the area which has delaminated . This pipe was originally fitted by me around the mid 1980s possibly from a batch of poor quality pipe that was imported at that time.

There have been many reports of pin holes developing in copper piping from the 1980's. My pipework is from that era, but no problems so far.

I've heard this happens when a slither of material from the mandrel gets embedded in the copper pipe during the drawing process. The mandrel is some type of steel, which then slowly rusts through over years eventually causing a pinhole leak.

Well ..... If its part of a batch bought and fitted at the same time ---- how about checking the rest of them?

I would have said more of a reason why you should add a further batch of inhibitor. Perhaps alternatively, a shed load of Sodium Molybdenate.

I put CH in our place in the mid 90s.

I've had the same happen as you describe, but just the once a couple of years ago, if that's any comfort.

I'm hoping it's a few and far between kind of thing.

How do you add the inhibitor to the incoming water main?

I'm sure not all of your pipe carries mains water. I had assumed that

22mm under a hallway floor would have been a primary circuit.

I would also turn my stop-c*ck off to stop the primary header tank from refilling and so steady the leak before draining down.

During production this should be easy to detect using standard metal detector technology, and should have resulted in that section being rejected as it was taken from the production line. Brian

But it is a rare event and a relatively low value product, which is why it isn't done.
