In most borough in the UK a Residents Permit does not guarantee you a space, it just exempts you from paying or being fined.

So yes you would needed dedicated spaces. Not sure councils will embrace this as at present on my street they sell space (well charge for parking) during the day when residents are at work. If the spaces were dedicated they couldn't do that leading to a loss of daytime parking and a loss of funds to the council

Replace the kerbstones with some sort of socket strip. I'm not saying this is the /best/ idea, just that it's one possibility in the face of the relentless 'can't' attitude.

A fact overlooked my many who thought making their road resident parking was a good idea. It doesn't even guarantee that you can actually obtain a permit to park on the road in which you live.

All good points. It's clearly impossible to design around this, so let's not bother even thinking about it. In any case, this whole car idea is doomed - you'd suffocate at speeds above 30mph.

AIUI, no one in fact has any actual right to park permanently outside their own house (except perhaps disabled in a designated space). One can park temporarily on the road, only. Otherwise it's obstruction.

It worked well where I lived. The first permit for a household was (initially) free, a second wasn't and only granted if there was capacity. A third was like very expensive rocking horse s*it.

The students in HMO's didn't like it though.

There's a sort of ripple effect too; if you don't have permit parking but neighbouring roads do, guess where all the excess vehicles park? So you too choose permit parking, and so on.

No, that is not the moral. The moral is, don't go at it half-arsed. Present a proper, researched, solution with numbers (cost, lifetime, build-time, decommissioning costs, as appropriate), benefits, drawbacks, and probably other things too. What we tend to see are simplistic suggestions, most of which have been put forward before and for which detail was requested and none was ever forthcoming. And so on. And the kids didn't try; they just burbled.

Exactly. The Left is full of emotionally satisfying political and utterly qualitative solutions that everyone one on the right discarded years ago., none of which pass the cost-benefit test.
