I'm trying to amass a decent shop to teach my kids and maybe a few neighbor kids some shop safety and wood and metal basics. They gotta get it some where, and need to learn the pride in a job well done. Dig

Biscuit Jointer...which one.... ?

Already went out in the shop and painted it "Blue"...gota do that because its the only way I keep "my" tools in my shop...otherwise they end up in one of the Boys' shops...and I'll never get it back... Bob Griffiths

Air filtration of the worst kind.

Here is a photo of a shop where the owner did not follow the guidelines. http://www.netcentral.co.uk/steveb/photos/goodwin/explosion2_sm.jpgThis was created by a rather large dog on a truly horrible diet. Smaller dogs usually just zip around the shop like hairy little bottle rockets.

Door lip bits for kitchen cabinets?

Maybe I'll finish the shop cabinets in 4-5 years, then I can start on the in-house projects. You never heard of Truth In Advertising?

Jointech Floating Tables

I purchased the 36" Saw Train for the reasons you mention, plus the use of the SS threaded rod vs plastic locks (Incra now offers) and in my small shop I couldn't handle the length of the Incra fence slide. My next addition is the 17" floating table.

Workbench construction - use of laminated Ash

I find it has a "bright and cheerful" look when left a natural color on shop fixtures. My shop made router table, outfeed table, and many jigs are made of or trimmed with ash. Barry

Forstner bits

I wouldn't trust any old sharpening shop with them, but there is a shop that offers Forstner sharpening on eBay. Know nothing about them. Connecticut Valley Manufacturing (Convalco) is the original manufacturer of Forstner bits, since eighteen-something.

Math help please, computing an arc and radius.

Ran to the shop and tried it, coupla nails & scrap. You don't get repeatability with this; have to draw one apron piece and cut both together. Had a spool of 10# laying around the shop; heavier might resist the pencil better.

Beginner Advice

I didn't think of taking a course but knew a crafter with an excellent shop and worked there a couple of afternoons a week in exchange for being taught how to use the mahines safely and basic construction. It was worth it! And I got to use first class machines before I went looking to buy.
