Tip recycling

The bins thread triggered this. Yesterday I took a large double glazing unit and a smaller sheet of glass to the tip. They have reorganised the segregation, so I asked where to dump them. "Oh in the scrap metal bin". I queried this asking whether I should just throw them in on ...

Disposals compatible with septic systems?

Our county was selling compost bins for $15 or $20 a couple of years ago. Meat scraps or anything fatty should go in the garbage. But any vegetable matter, yard waste, egg shells, teabags, coffee grounds, etc. can be composted.

How do you keep purple heart purple?

Hi, I'm making some varnished rope bins for a sailboat deck out of purple heart and mahogany. The ph looks fabulous when I get it but after I sand out the planing marks and mill it the purple color fades to kind of a dirty gray. What am I doing wrong? Heat from the orbital sander?

One last question (today that is...) on buying rough hardwood

They figured it out; they had stopped scrapping the crap, so the bins filled up with crap and they thought they had a full inventory. But customers discovered there was nothing purchasable, so they shopped elsewhere.

Compost question

We don't cover any of our bins and we keep a watering can nearby to add water (from the pond) if needed. They stay steamy hot in the middle of winter and they are in shade. It probably does not hurt it to cover it, but if it turns sour (stinky) you know more air circulation is needed.
