Got a shop vac? It might be worth a try to pull the stopper closer and then fish it out.

You can get gasket material at the auto parts shop. I think a letter-sized sheet is about five bucks.
Had to use the shop vac's hose though.
Well, wet/dry shop vac comes to mind. Don't know if it is feasible but might be worth a try.
Without unions you'd all be working in sweat shop conditions.
