I've set the sensor for my detached shop to turn on 2 floodlights and to sound a 120 db warble siren. The system can be controlled from the house or shop.
MOST independents do better work - in many cases the tire shop "mechanics" are not qualified - just like a lube shop.
For a month or two every year, I have access to a HS machine shop. Could easily machine up my own fittings from the stockpile of brass I've accumulated from auctions - like all the fittings I've made for my shop-built air compressor (manifold, checkvalve etc).

Had the same trouble with a local charity shop who said they'd take any books. Humped in eight large boxes and was told to take them away again. Luckily the Cancer Relief shop took them all..! They are more difficult. However, I'm doing my bit...!
In message , none writes Businesses usually get permission if they are truly monitoring public property but I think you will find that a proportion of the shop frontage is part of the shop property. The data protection act is also involved.
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha My two experiences of the High Wycombe shop are (1) whne looking for a Trend router jig: surly staff who couldn't give a toss about attending to customers and (2) I wanted some flush bolts for bifold doors: prices 4x screwfix for far less than 4x the quality.

There used to be a shop in Ealing called "Importers" that roasted coffee on the premises. Until the early 90s when H&S meant you couldn't do it in a shop where the machine might unsupervised. Coffee roasting produces oils which are quite flammable.
