Strange USB PSU issue and a merry dance

Apple ones go into pulse mode when current drain is low. I'd imagine that this is deliberate to protect batteries on charge? Brian

How can I tell when my pineapple is ripe?

you can do what the other poster suggested or you can just cut up a piece of apple (with the skin) and stick it in the center of the pineapple, that has worked nearly everytime for me.

Micro USB issues ...

Apple's patent cites an earlier one from 1937, I don't think the apple one has expired yet, only from 2007 So either people are using a non-infringing method, or its just China and they don't care.

Freezer door alarm

I had one for a fridge which was a red plastic apple shape incorporating a light sensor. I don't know if the leakage around a freezer door slightly open would be enough for it to operate. Chris
