water pipe make noise.

Hope some one can shed some light to my prblem. Recently my water pipe started make some grunting noise. It sounds like that you put some heavy stuff on a wood shelf which is going to crash. I thought I had problem on my floor but find out it is my pipe later. The noise comes from very begining of the pipe. It is right after the hot pipe comes out from the water heater. Since both cold water pipe and hot water run next to each other I can hardly tell which is making the noise. The noise will gone when I open a faucet or use my toliet but it comes back after that. I was told that it could be the air for somehow goes into the pipe. I was suggested to open all the faucetes and toliet but turn off the main faucet to drain out all the water and then turn the main faucet back out to let the water run through all the pipe for a while. I did but it did not solve my problem. Any other idea?

Thanks in advance

From your post, I'm assuming the noise is emanating from the area of the water heater. One possible cause could be a loose washer in the supply valve on the cold water feed into the tank. When water passes thru the valve at a certain rate it can cause the washer to vibrate. To check for this, turn off all the water in the dwelling & disassemble the valve. If the washer is loose but in good shape just tighten the screw. If not, replace it. In fact, a better solution would be to replace the entire valve with a ball valve, which has no washer, thereby eliminating a recurrence. If the valve is OK, then you have a mystery on your hands.

Thank you very much for your post. I havn't check the valve since I am not sure where it is. However, I tried this. I cut off the water into the water heating but the noise still there. In fact, the noise come when the water is not runing. It seems link some kind of pressure is accumulated in the pipe. After I use the toliet or turn on a faucet. There is no noise when the water is running.

If its Water Hammer, then you need a Hammer Arrestor. If its loose Pipe Straps redo them. I could be too high a Water Pressure also.

You didn't say if the water heater was gas or electric.

Maybe you hear the sound gas water heaters make when mineral deposits build up inside the bottom of the tank, although it is usually described as a boiling, popping, bubbling, creaking or cracking sound. Electric water heaters make a hissing or frying noise when mineral deposits build up on the elements.

Hope this helps

No, you put magnets on your fuel line to increase mileage. I saw it in a magazine, right next to "Amazing Toilet That Flushes Up!!"

My water heater is electric heater.

I feel the sound is coming from the pipe around the presure regulator. Since I user presured water washer to clean out my deck recently, does that affect my presure regulator. Does anyone know how to adjust the presure regualtor?

I don't think water hammer is my problem. The noise happens no matter how fast I turn off my faucet. The noise doesn't go away with time pass. It stops sometime duing the night. I wonder if it is related with the presure in the pipe.

For some unknow reason, the noise of my pipe goes away. Well, at least for two days now. I don't know what fixed it. I tried to adjust my pressure regulator but I turn back to its original setting becuase there was no help. I also turn off the main for four days when I was away from my house. Hope it won't come back. I am going to use my pressure washer on this weekend. We will see.
