Has anyone tried cleaning the inside of a copper pipe then crimping and soldering the end shut? Did it work?

Yes, it can work. Crimping first, then soldering helps create a strong seal. Just ensure the pipe is clean inside and out for proper adhesion. However, solder alone is usually enough if done correctly.
