how can I tell what type of top coat over the stain was used on an solid oak floor?

If it is shellac, it will be softened by alcohol. If it is polyurethane, alcohol will not affect it. If it is lacquer, it would be very unusual. If it is red paint, it will look red.
Ask the guy who put it on.
