does anyone know why I would be getting little pieces of what appears to be water softener salt coming out if the faucets in the house.

Is it possible that it's pieces of a disintegrating dip tube in the water heater?

If it burns/melts it's plastic, if it fizzes in vinegar it could be chlorides, sulfates etc.. Describe it better and what happens when you do those things.
How old is the softener and do you always have soft water.
