With a dead inverter generator, would it be possible to pull the inverter out and use it? A large sine wave inverter has good value. Or would the circuitry be so emeshed as to make it impractical?

Most likely it could be used if it is not the inverter that failed. What caused the dead inverter generator? The engine? If so it is probably best to get the engine fixed.
Highly unlikely to be of any value separate from the rest of the generator system. Those inverters do not take a 12VDC input like a typical standalone inverter. Consider it a source of spare parts for a matching unit. If you don't have a matching unit ebay it for a few bucks.
