Safe storage of Hcl

I want to safely store this bottle of Hcl.

There is a wax paper under the cap that does a fair job of slowing down the release of the vapors.

But I noticed a screw about 3 feet away that was rusted.

Storing it outside is not an option.

I am looking for ideas of minimizing the release of those acidic vapors.

Thanks, Andy

I don't know what was in it, but I kept a crystal type toilet bowl cleaner under my bathroom sink. The kind they used to sell with a cardboard cylinder and round vinyl insert that snaps in and out at the top to open it up. It damaged the hinges on one side of the cabinet, and the chrome on my bathroom heater from 1947 that was in perfect condition, even the cloth covered cord. It still works, with a foot switch even, but the chrome has some pits. (and when neghbors got replacement cabinet, I got matching hinges from their old ones.)

I would try alt.chemistry .

Why de-cant muriatic acid into something less secure ? Simply store it in the original container with the lid screwed on tightly. The wax paper may or may not be helping. John T.

That is what I figured too.

I probably would not store it in a cabinet where vapor might accumulate but on my basement on the floor somewhere out of the way.

A secure open-to-air shelf near a garage or shed door .. ? John T.

BTW, these ere normal hinges, on the outside of the cabinet. But the closest metal to the toiilet bowl cleaner. Not a lot of corrosion -- they look the same as before -- but the door springs open a couple inches while the other door continues to shut all the way and stay shut.

+1

I'd bet the rusted screw is unrelated.

The rusted screw is not unrelated. :-)

Screws do not rust that way when indoors and never had gotten wet.
