Greg equated the PoCo controlling our thermostats with the government controlling our thermostats - he called it "a distinction without a difference" and managed to bring the green deal people into the picture. Even bungee jumpers don't stretch things that far.

Do you also believe that they might use that same pen to:
- Take over your car via the OnStar style hardware? OnStar can already shut down the vehicle, so a stroke of pen could control when you can drive. The hardware is in place.
- Read your pacemaker data? A stroke of a pen could require pacemakers to send data to government agencies directly. The hardware is in place. (I won't even mention the possibility of actually *controlling* the pacemaker or insulin pump from afar. Whoops...I already did.)
- Take over your smart fridge? A stroke of a pen could allow them to limit the temperature of the hot water so you don't burn yourself/waste electricity. The hardware is in place.
What other "hardware in place" devices keep you up at night worrying about the power of the legislative pen?
Easy enough to fix. No need for a thermostat, just a switch. When it gets down to 50 I turn the AC off for a while.

Actually over 100 years ago a guy figured out if you put a mercury switch on a bi metallic coil, you could regulate the temperature quite well. It is hard to beat a Honeywell T-87 for reliability and ease of use.

At a certain point I really don't care. I simply respond in the second person to the nym you present here. There are only about a half dozen people here with the integrity of their opinion to post with their real name. The rest are just anonymous people writing on the s*it house wall.
I suppose these days you could use the bi metal coil with a microswitch or an optical sensor but the thermistor in an electronic thermostat is cheaper and they can charge more. I doubt the whole card in a smart thermostat costs a buck from Alibaba if you buy a few thousand.
I don't understand how China can send out electronic devices as cheep as they do. I just bought from Amazon 4 thermostates for $ 16.
They are just circuit boards with a sennsor that has a wire about 2 feet long to connect them. You do have to apply 12 volts DC to it. Then you use the LED display and a switch to set it to come on or off and the temperature yo want. It has a relay that comes on either on high or low temperature. Only drawback for most is the display is for C only.
