Peep hole installation opinions on wood door

Hi all, my wife wants me to install a new peep hole viewer at her height on a solid wood door. IIRC when I installed the existing one I drilled a 1/8" pilot hole and regular twist drill for the hole.

Since the new one needs a 1/2" hole what is your opinion on the drill bit? A regular twist drill or a spade bit? I don't want to splinter the wood on either side of the door.

Any other thoughts are also appreciated. Thanks.

Either twist or straight will work, but drill from both sides. Go through with the 1/8" pilot. Start the hole from one side and go about

1/4" deep, then go to the other side and finish.

Alternative solutions: Camera Get a taller wife Step stool Foot rest on the door

Ed, your solution was perfect and exactly what we did at a previous home which had no peep hole.

Some years ago, we needed an even easier and opposite fix. When we moved to our present co-op every unit's front door had two peep holes. We really didn't want or need two. However, we had a very heavy solid brass door knocker that mounted with heavy bolts and the bolt heat had decorative covers. We were able to remove one of the peep holes and utilize that hole for one of the bolts through the door. No one would ever notice the difference.

Do you crack the lense? :)

She has already rejected this idea and doesn't want/have a smartass phone.

She read the other replies and got a laugh. When she goes to the grocery store she has to ask someone to get stuff from the upper shelves.

I'm familiar with those fisheye view peep holes but last month I saw a type that was new to me.

Rather than a fixed straight ahead view, it was mounted in a sort of turret so you could swivel it up and down, left and right. Pan and tilt, but not zoom.

Give me a link. I haven't found any of those in my research.

Scroll past the electronic one and look at the optical choices.

I saw it on an Army base so I have no idea where they got it.
