OT? I don't mind having to bring my own bag to the supermarket. I like the plastic bags but they look terrible hanging from trees, etc.
But when I bring my own bag, the cashiers no longer fill it. They just pass the food to the "bagging area" but they don't bag.
Is this true everywhere?
When I have to buy paper bags at 5c each, I think they do fill those.

Walmart puts the items in a plastic bag but you have to place the full bag in the buggy to carry it out to your car. Same as the other 2 food stores I shop at.
I do not think any of them have a paper bag. I never bring my own bags.
Yah, it's been a couple years since I've been to an Aldis but I think they require bring your own bag?? I think Aldis costs 25 cents to use their shopping carts too?

Nope. Although I'm usually almost done bagging by the time they finish ringing up the order, so they don't have to do much.
No. The local grocery store bags and will carry out if a customer has much at all.
Maybe I should have said that Baltimore City and Baltimore County have outlawed plastic bags for supermarkets and some other kinds of stores, and require them to charge for the paper bags, in order to get people to use reusable bags, the kind that have handles and don't tear right away. And it's not as convenient as plastic bags, but it's for a good reason.
However at 3 or more stores I've been to, when you don't buy their bags, they also don't PUT it in your bag. A) They're better at it than I am, B) I don't have a butler, a cook, a chauffeur, a secretary, a foreman, a detective on retainer, a lawyer, a maid, or a manicurist. The bagger and the barber was the only service I get, and I only get a haircut once in a while. So without the bagger, my status has gone down dramatically, and it's more work too.
(Not every store even has bags but I don't know if that's temporary or not.)
Same here. I checked out their store and wanted to buy a few tomatoes. There was one cashier and two ahead of me with carts filed to the brim. I walked out.
You put in a quarter to release the cart, you get it back when you return it.
Crappy store anyway.
I've been using reusable bags for years. The two stores I shop at, Publix and Detweilers, bag for you. Publix will also take the bags and put them in your car if you want. If it is raining, they will walk you out with an umbrella.
Publix is the the cheapest, but the service is fantastic.
Hmmm. It seems so strange that just because I'm providing the bag, ... Is it that they won't let anyone else drive their car so they figure I don't want them to touch my bag? Might dent the fender. Don't touch!
Maybe it will change in a while. I'm not going to complain but I bet others will.

Skid's such a lazy inconsiderate lout he's never returned a cart to the cart corral, so of course he doesn't know you get your quarter back. He's just paying SOMEONE ELSE a quarter to return the cart. Used ti see "homeless guys" hanging around the grocery store lot returning carts for the quarters. A local store just started requiring "looneys" ( slang for Canadian dollar coins)

Yeah, but the store saves $ on the number of checkout people it needs to hire and can pass along those savings as lower prices to you. Also, you save directly by not tipping those hard working, minimal wage baggers.

Tipping baggers? That sure doesn't happen around here. OTOH, they're mostly unionized.
At the local Aldis, I think if you got a EBT card, they just waive you on thru.
It's a dime per here. I have several in the trunk that I reuse. Several dozen trips or more per each bag. I grabbed a bunch from the office when Noah's would deliver bagels on fridays, they're bags were a bit heavier and a bit larger than the standard grocery store bag. I'm still re-using the Noah's bags a decade later.
Why not? They are completely reusable.
The local stores around here stopped bagging in customer supplied bags during the pandemic. I don't know if they have restarted, I've used the self-checkout exclusively for the last three years.
At one of the grocery stores where we shop, the baggers aren't store employees. They're just volunteers who work for tips.
