There are over a half million miles of underwater cable according to this article. The longest cable is 24,000 miles long.

Yup, and it's all vulnerable. Remember when somebody cut the cable off the coast of Egypt? Suddenly all the call centers in India had to route via the Pacific cables for a round the world trip to Europe. Supposedly that was just some ship dropping anchor in the wrong place and not deliberate sabotage.
