That luan or wonderboard seems the best way to go. How do you attach it to the underfloor, nails or glue?

Lots of both. This may be one case where if a little bit is good, a lot more is much better. Construction adhesives are universally reasonable these days, as are the special ring shank nails used in underlayments. Rent or buy an air nailer for that part of the job or you will be forever swinging a hammer to put in as many nails as the pros like to use. HTH
