Kitchen sink area GFCI distance ?

What is the National Code distance from the kitchen sink to an outlet that must be GFCI ?..I had always thought it was any outlet within 3 ft of the sink...but some else had said any outlet within 6 ft of the sink had to be GFCI protected ?

Any receptacle servicing the kitchen countertop. No max or min distance.
