I need help because I've never drilled ten inches into concrete. Nothing fits!

I need to drill a drainage hole about an inch wide in a block wall. So I bought this Bauer 1992E-B impact drill from Harbor Freight. Bauer 1992E-B 1/2-inch reversible hammer drill

Then I bought from Amazon this ten-inch long one-inch drill bit.

(What does 9-1/20-inch mean anyway?)

The problem is the drill bit has big female threads! Yet the impact hammer drill is expecting a bit.



What did I do wrong?



What can make it right?


You want a hammer drill, and the appropriate drill bit for that drill. An impact drill is not the right tool. The hammer drill hammers the bit down into the hole as it turns. The impact drill impacts the drill bit rotationally for higher torque effect.

You could find a bolt that screws into the "drill bit", then cut off the head so you can attach the drill to it, but it might be slow going.

Concrete blocks are usually pretty easy to drill into with a masonry bit and a regular drill although a hammer drill is preferred. Try a smaller size to start - 1/4 or 3/8. Poured concrete is tougher and ancient farmer-poured concrete is a brute because it's all rocks. :-) John T.

I appreciate that information as I don't know anything about drill bits. And I can't move forward until I find out how drill bits attach to drills.

Do you think the chuck might come off? That might expose the male threads on the end of the motor shaft. I have the owners manual which shows the threads but doesn't say the size.

My toolbox set of open-end wrenches are too fat to fit under the chuck.

My motorcycle kit 17mm is too small so it might be 11/16ths or 3/4 inch.

Do you think the chuck can be removed if I find a thin enough wrench?

Thanks. The wall is about thigh high and it has soil behind it and it's cracking at spots where the water is pushing against it so I just want to drill drain holes. I "think" it's concrete block with stucco but I don't know for sure. All I know is I need to insert drain holes for water runoff.

The holes have to be big though as they will clog, won't they?

So I got a one-inch diamond drill bit but I can't yet figure out how the drill bit attaches to the Harbor Freight Hammer Drill I got for the job.

What size hole would you drill to prevent it from clogging? I figured the smallest possible would be one inch.

Maybe two or three inches is better?

Perhaps the wall is cracking / failing for other reasons - and you are simply seeing the normal seepage of water because of the cracks ? ie : perhaps the water isn't _causing_ the cracks ? Why not show us pics of the wall ? And let us know where-on-earth you live .. John T.

WADR, no need to post several pictures of the same thing. YOo did the same thing in your next post too. It wastes my time to click on each link, especially when they are pictures of a drill. I know what a drill looks like, and I know what it means to have a wrench t hat is thicker than the space available.

Is it a block wall or a concrete wall? You use both words.

Is this a retaining wall at the base of a small hill?

If you look in the last picture of the bit, it shows the bit right up against the chuck No indication of how it attaches, and in the "items often bought together"**, nothing to help it attach. It's a shame there is only one comment. A big advantage of Amazon is the comments often explain what the descrition doesn't.

**BTW, Amazon often gives 2 items that are never bought together. I wonder why. One of my few complaints about Amazon, but this one is not important.

it has over 1000 reviews and if you click on attachement capability there are 3, all complainng like you are that it doesn't attach to a drill and if you click on attachment capability there are 3, all saying it works with an angle grinder. And maybe just buy an angle grinder. they have many uses. I have one from HF and I don't use it much but I used it 3 days ago and it worked fine.

You can also look for more bits in the Products Related list, even if they are not the size you want, and read the comments for them, about attaching.

Or if there is no hole in the drill's shaft to stop it from turning, and I suppose there is not, since it has the flat sides, buy a thinner wrench or a set of them. They sell them. Then you have to iirc tighten the chuck and hit the chuck key to remove the chuck.

Maybe nothing. I would have expected it to attach too. Or one could say you didn't look at the pictures enough.

There are adapters to mate threaded core bits to drill chucks. You'll need to know the pitch on the threads in your bit.

Really, you might have been better off going to your local equipment rental and renting the drill and the bit together. That's what we do when we need to drill through our masonry house.

Quarter an inch. It doesn't matter if it clogs, soil is porous. Just use a bit for concrete that fits into the drill; here that would be 8 or 10 mm. Too wide and it becomes hard to do, and weakens the wall. I have seen holes of that diameter in garden walls for draining. Often the hole are made with tubing while the concrete is wet.

I live at the other side of the pond to you; I am used to drill into concrete, but I'm not familiar with your tools. So I use a drill that rotates at high speed and also hammers. I have never seen a bit like the one in your photos, I don't know how to attach that thing.

If the concrete is reinforced, ie, it has iron rods inside, the iron can rust and burst the concrete.

And concrete never stops getting harder. I'll never forget knocking out 100 year old stabling with a sledge hammer that weighed half as much as I did as a teenager - - -

What you bought is a "core drill". It will not fit the chuck thread.

If this is a cinder block wall, drilling through it will just make it a storage contailer for water to get to other places from, and to freeze in the winter, expand, and break down the wall.

We need to store water for the coming water shortage.

I don't have any stories about hard work, but I do remember 1971 when the tour guide at the Panama Canal also pointed out that the concrete was harder every year, and harder than when it was built (1901?) and that when ships bumped in the lock walls, it was the ships that got damaged.
