A project to use hydrogen for home heating and cooking is hitting some bugs.

Thanks for that link. It does seem silly to make hydrogen with electricity and then pipe the H2 to houses instead of electrifying those houses. Industrial uses might be a better choice.

Or putting solar heat collectors at the house.

Makes more sense.

We had our HVAC system tune up and check up a few days ago and owner said a lot of customers going for heat pumps. If I needed either an new AC or oil heater, I would go that way myself.

That could be problematic in Scotland. Or, for that matter, in Michigan where we celebrate a sunny day as a gift. (Quite a few of those sunny days are accompanied by very cold temperatures.) We get some kind of precipitation 124 days per year, and only 183 sunny days per year.

There isn't much better than to walk outside on a clear winter night to stargaze. It's best when the moon is full. Not many people get to grow up in Nebraska, though.

I've seen the Milky Way once or twice. Never at my home.

The sun shines, even on cloudy days. While clouds can reduce the amount of energy reaching the solar collectors, they don't eliminate it (here in sunny California, a cloudy day reduces my generation by about 50%).

Michigan is a bit higher in latitude, so the insolation in the winter will be less, but not zero.

The moon shines pretty much everywhere. Even Nebraska can't beat the night sky at 8,000 ft in the Sierra Nevada range, or in the middle of death valley.

Of course it is not feasible. That's always the case with "ideers" that come from Leftist and environmentalist scum. There isn't even a good reason to pursue such a thing, which is also typical of Leftists schemes.

Rather than listening to such people they should hunted down like rabid animals and eradicated. I personally refuse to make any changes at all being pushed by the climate cult and other like dirtbags.

I've seen it once when I visited someone in west Texas (about 100 miles west of Waco).

Friend of mine is an EE. He calculated that his roof didn't receive enough sun to make any kind of solar worth it.

Depending on who's talking, I might save $8,000 over 20 years on a solar purchase or maybe a 10-year payoff of the system. Looks like it might cost $15,000 to $20,000 for a system.

And, of course, I'd have to remove the snow from them in the winter. Nope. Not shoveling a foot of snow off a fragile solar panel.

Guy I know had it done had to sue the installer a few years later when his roof started leaking.

As a homeowner I only want things that have stood the test of time. I am sure there must be a finite lifetime on solar panels and in time efficiency diminishes needing replacement.

That may be crudely put but I also prefer that the market decides what is best and science and technical things not be mandated by the government who also always thinks that one size fits all.

Trials ALWAYS have problems. It is part of the development process. The M14 rifle use to disassemble itself when solders crawled under barbed wire. The engines on the M1 tanks were a total joke! This is all normal. You learn from these trials.

This would allow for the use of unreliable electricity sources, such as wind and solar, to use hydrogen as a sort of battery to store energy when conditions are good for generation of electricity.

If would also allow for energy sources that are highly reliable, such as nuclear energy, but have trouble being ramped up and down to meet demand changes during the day to also bank energy.

H2 would be great for electric vehicles using fuel cells. And if under the weirdest of circumstances, one of the hardened hydrogen car tanks actually discharges, the fireball will rise up and away from the car, unlike battery electric vehicles that if you can't get out of the car immediately under your own power the resulting battery fire will kill you.

Oh and there is some fascinating research coming out of Japan (Toyota) on internal combustion engines using H2 as well.

And there are new development giving a 98% efficiency to converting water into H2 with electricity. Fascinating developments. Seems the loss of efficiency from older methods is caused by bubbles on the electrodes.

Now we need now to get the "command economy" controls freaks totalitarianists (fascists/communists/wokies/ leftists) out of this and let the market figure things out.

Quality solar panels are currently _warranted_ to produce more than 80% of the panel capacity for 25 years.

Putting solar on the roof is a no-brainer investment which yields from 5% to 10% annually, and pays itself off in less than a decade, after which its all gravy. Even in Michigan.
