Gas Cooktop Pipe Sealant Question

May 05, 2026 Last reply: 3 months ago 5 Replies

I am replacing an old gas cooktop and need to know what kind of sealant is appropriate for the pipe connection. Is Teflon tape okay or should I use pipe dope? Thanks.

Professional plumbers use both . My son is one ...

I would hope that as a professional, he only uses the proper teflon tape designed specifically for gases rather than liquids. The standard white plumbing teflon tape is not allowed by most codes.

While yellow teflon tape is "allowed" it is definitely not "recommended" Teflon paste is the "preferred" method

I don't know the particulars , this was something he mentioned as an incidental in a conversation . I do know that he has a medical gas certification on his journeyman certificate .
