FYI: Small "Toro" riding mowers are actually MTD

Went to local Toro dealer to check out a small (42-in) riding mower, only to be told that they don't sell them because they are not really Toro. They sell the walk-behinds and the Zero-turn Toro machines, but in the range in which I was interested they sell only Ariens.

I believe it was MTD who also bought out Troy Bilt. I was unaware of Toro or perhaps Toro was also Troy Bilt. (shrugs)

MTD contract builds for companies it does not own, and do not own it. They will build anything for anyone and put that company's name on it.

The "Modern Tool and Die" company is a family owned American business that's been around since the 30's. Over the years they've acquired a pile of companies, and built everything from automobile parts to peddle cars. These days they seem to specialize in consumer grade lawn and garden equipment. If you really want a consumer grade "Toro", just go to an MTD dealer.

The low-end Toro riders and walk-behinds are built by MTD, yes. Those are usually sold at the discount places - Home Depot, Walmart, etc. Naturally the local dealer isn't going to bother carrying that line since it would mean competing with the discounters. So he's offering an alternative brand.
