Furnace not coming on with programmable thermostat

What he is saying is he needs to keep the thermostat set at 82F in order to barely maintain 70.

Sounds like an anticipator/dip switch or firing setting adjustment is needed, or the stat is not level on the wall.

Crickets.... !

Hopefully he got one from a brand most folks RECOGNIZE, like White Rogers or Honeywell.

There's a reason why brands like HP, Kenmore, Hoover, and Whirlpool are still around: because they are the best at what they make! lol

WTH is 'Totaline' anyway?...

What does Kenmore make?

Level on the wall?? If it is programmable (as I think I remember OP said), it is unlikely to have a mercury bead and is almost certain to be solid state. Tilt shouldn't affect function. It's been many decades since I saw a programmable thermostat with a motor driven analog clock on the front.

Another thought - if the furnace is modern enough to have a circuit board controller (probably 92% or more efficient), there may be neon or LED indicators on the board to indicate various malfunctions. Worth the

5 or 10 minutes to pop off the rear cover of the furnace and look for them. There's probably a schematic or other instruction sheet either on the inside of the rear cover or another obvious location to help if you can't locate the owner's manual in a drawer or on line.

Major appliances.

Hullo? That's like asking what Chevrolet makes!

Or just connect the two heat wires together at the thermostat and see if the furnace comes on immediately. That was suggested by many here a week ago.

I don't think "Kenmore" has ever made anything. It's a Sears brand and they had in made by one or more of the major appliance manufacturers. Kind of like a "Westinghouse" TV. It has no manufacturing behind it, it's just a company with some offices that bought the rights to the name. The TV is built by some volume, cheap manufacturer in China or similar.

Chevrolet makes cars and trucks. Kenmore buys labels that go on appliance made by Whirlpool, LG, etc. Kenmore manufactures nothing. No factory, no tooling.

Alright alright alright, bad example, ex-CYOOOOZ me! I just go by brands I recognize for basic household needs, like washers, refrigerators, and thermostats. That was the point I was trying to make.

My only point was, if necessary, buy a replacement thermostat brand that most people recognize - which it seems you did.

Now the question is, did you install it yet, and does it maintain temperature within two degrees of set point, instead of twelve? ;)

OMG! Cleaning the "flame sense" rod resolved my furnace problem. Now my furnace is working (i.e., the room temp is now above freezing!).

The cost of a pad of steel wool was much less than calling a HVAC technician who would try to sell me a new furnace for a gazillion bucks.
