What's a food cellar? Shelving for canned vegetables? A root cellar?

A root cellar is generally a cool dry place a couple of feet into the ground. You dig a hole and you keep heat out of it. Aside from that, what exactly are you looking to do?
misc.survivalism would be a good start.
