My daughter just called and they are looking to install a fence around their yard (Delaware OH area). They are looking at 280 feet of 4 ft vinyl picket fence, with one gate. The first estimate they got was an astromomical (at least to me!) $12,450! I guestimated closer to $5000 when I checked the price at Lowes of the type they were looking at and doubled it for the installation.
Ay thoughts on whether this is even a reasonable estimate (mine or theirs?)

My neighbor did a guesstimate on 40 ft. of vinyl across his front porch. He came up with $500 pricing out the 4ft. high with a couple posts. When I asked if he included connectors for attaching the fence to the sleeves, the
4x4's treated which the vinyl covers _slip_ over, the vinyl sleeves (posts) themselves, the plates for the 4x4's,lags & shields, the vinyl caps for on top of the sleeves, and a few other items that slip my mind at the moment, his answer was _no_. After writing down all the needed material, his cost was a little over $1,300.00. Far cry from his guesstimate. Throwing around figures is meaningless unless you price out ALL the materials needed. Lesson here is don't guesstimate. Get all your ducks in a row b/4 second guessing. Truthfully, $5k doesn't sound close.Yup. I included all the 'fix'ins' for the installation. Even padded it for the requisite 4 cases of beer to reward my friends for their hard work (AFTER the job's done of course!). Still no where near the $12K! Best thing is to go for another 'official' estimate, and them maybe take their list to lowes to see what they can do.
Seems high. We installed our 300 feet of 6ft high privacy PVC fence for approx same price.
For that much I'll come and stand and glare at trespassers every night.
