facia boards

I'm going to replace some facia boards. I think all boards are common pine (hard to tell since they are painted). My facia boards are 1x6 with a 1x2 drip cap near top. I was thinking of replacing the 1x6 with hardiplank and the 1x2 w/cedar. I was not able to find 1x2 in hardiplank. One repair guy told me that it probably was better to go with all cedar. When I mentioned to him about gutters, he said the screws would strip putting them into the hardiplank but someone else said I could predrill holes in hardiplank so I'm a bit confused. He also said that if the gutters were hung instead of screwed/nailed there wouldn't be any facia boards rotting (my main concern).

Bottom line: Assuming I'm installing gutters (hung or screwed), is it a good/bad idea to mix the 1x6 hardiplank facia boards with a 1x2 cedar drip caps assuming I'm trying to prevent wood rot? Whatever I use, they will be painted to match the house in color. Advice please.

I installed HardiPlank on my house 2 years ago. Great stuff. I would NOT recommend screwing into it though. James Hardi does not recommend it either. The 1x2 cedar drip cap is fine if you want to do that, but the HardiPlank does not need it. I would definately recommend you "hang" the gutter and not "screw" it into the HP.
