Does GFCI receptacle act as a circuit breaker?

Will a 15 or 20 amp GFCI receptacle trip there is not a ground fault but if more than its rated current flows through it?

No, but they are interesting to look at if you have a defective one to take apart. They have a nifty little toroidal transformer feeding an op-amp which then drives a small solenoid.
