Central air freezeing up

My central air unit is 10 yrs old, never failed till now.

Last night I noticed that the blower wasn't blowing at a high speed that I normally hear.

Today whe I got home I noticed it to be warm in the house, the blower still not putting out max air.

Went outside the compressor lines froze up, shut it down thawed lines with garden hose, waited about 30 mins turned on unit,... lines that exit compress, to house ( large line ) warm, normally that line is ice cold, and sweating.

I think its low on freon, I have a appointment tomorrow for a repair, should I ask the guy to put some dye in the system so we can find the leak, or is it normal for the system to be low after 10 yrs,I had the system checked about 2 yrs ago and it was fine.

Should I make any major repairs or repalace the entire unit? I don't want to have to pay for a second service call if the freon leaks out next week, and not know where its going.

What kinda freon goes in a home unit? is R-22? Can you buy that in 1 lb cans, as I can put that stuff in myself as I have a set of guages.

Thanks Tom

if the blower it not moving the COLD from the evaporator(the coil in the attic) then that is why the pipes going back the the compressor are freezing.... probably an electrical problem in the attic area of the a/c unit... could be the relay on the blower motor or alot of dirt on the evaporator coil(in the attic), or someother thing like blocked ventilation going back to the evaporator coil.

Hint one..

Hint two..

Hint three..

Forget about the leak, or being low on refrigerant, until the evap coil and blower is checked.

Replace a 10 year old system? Not unless you are getting a 12SEER or higher..

You local HVAC tech can explain to you that it is illegal for you without proper EPA certificaton to purchase, or attempt to charge any system other than a 134A automotive unit.. You COULD have an R500 machine...a R22 is more likely it..but you dont know..means, you have no EPA card, and no..you CAN NOT get the correct card over the internet.... Let your tech do what needs to be done, and discuss options with him.. If its out of refrigerant...its leaking....period.

Replace a 10 year old system??? You have money to burn???

Get the damn leak fixed!! If it's the coil and it can't be fixed, buy a new coil.

Leaks can be fixed..........then the refrigerate stays.

Simple........get a competent HVAC tech to diagnose the system, then fix it!

Yea..but what I want the EPA to do, is list R22 as "that freezyzone stuff" on the cut sheets..LOL

Oh...man..you gonna love this...tonight, between hangin out on the net, dinner with my dad, and my wife...I had this call from one of the bigger real estate agents (my personal one too) that I dont mind working with. Get this.... New home... closes on Monday.... NOT complete... Builder ( a first class jerkoff) is stating that he will add a (get ready to laugh...remember..UNFINISHED) 1.5 ton unit to the basement, for...

Drumroll................................................

$7600.00

Now..the problem I have with that, is that I know the installers doing the main units install, 4 tons, total cost bid, $4500....complete turn key.. AND...when I was looking the house over, the lineset was installed, uncapped, (raining, tropical storm and all) TURNED UP......

Can you imagine? The builders unit, on the main house, will last about 5 months, MAYBE, while the one I install, as an option, is gonna be chugin along years from now..LOL...this could be a good advertising situation.... Oh...my bid, for HIS electrician pulling the wires, straight air, no heat,

1.5 ton...

$2000, turnkey...with a 10 year warranty, and exended YorkCare...LOL

Jabs words are ringin in my ears....

I cant help it if you dont charge enough..LOL ok...time for a payraise..

Doubt it...no one around here does...and this is the land of humidity..like Turtles area...I dont get it... I price em with dryers, even though York has good ones in the units...UV-Cs and nice stats....and still cant figure out that price..
