Ceiling fan oil leak

When I removed a 25 - 45 years old ceiling fan to painting the ceiling, oil poured out of it when I tipped it at an angle. Is something busted or is this some archaic lubrication system? It runs smooth as silk -- at leaset it did...

Is it a Hunter? the old one use an oil sump - when you tilted it the oil ran out.

Got to be one of those weighty cast iron Hunters. If you lost less than a gallon, I wouldn't worry about it

Nothing is broken nor is an oil sump "archaic"...its what enabled your fan to run smooth as silk for the last 25-45 years.

Replace the lost oil via a cap on the top of the motor cover. Probably wouldn't hurt to totally replace the oil. Enter "original" on the page below for "Model", then see page 4 of the resultant PDF for more info...

It is a Hunter. Thanks for the info. Anything that leaks oil with the slightest of jostling seems archaic, but yes; it takes a licking and keeps on ticking...

Agreed - Great fan - I just picked up 4 of them at homecheapo, on clearance, for $100 each. installed them (not at my home). I wish I bought one for me. they are gone now.

Don't fret, there is absolutely no similarity between the "Hunter" of today and forty years ago

The only thing "Archaic" is the thought process that bought you to make such a statement about a product that has worked trouble free for 45 years. I have 11 Hunter originals I installed 35 years ago in this house, turned then on the day they were hung, and have only turned them off once a year for 2 minutes to check the oil level. Matter of fact, I've only added oil maybe twice in all that time. You can't buy that kind of quality anywhere anymore here in America. If you don't like your "Archaic" fan anymore I'll take it off your hands and pay the shipping.

This is hilarious!

You want to talk about "archaic"? You just responded to a 15 year old post as if it happened yesterday.

Whose "thought process" is faulty now?

Hmmm...and just what does it say about yours that you felt compelled to criticize the guy's thoughtful post just because he didn't micro-search the OP text before responding ;-(

Thoughtful?

Thoughtful:

- showing careful consideration or attention.

He missed the date of the original conversation

Thoughtful:

- showing consideration for the needs of other people

He insulted the OP's thought process

Micro-search?

You don't need a magnifying glass to read the date.

Only thing I can figure is you were an abused child-- or possibly raised by wolves....

Wow...and to think I defended you in your 3-way switch thread.

I'll be the bigger man and not take any of it back.
