Cause of Uneven spin on LG WM3431HS

A repair man came out to check uneven spin on an LG WM3431HS and showed me some broken screws securing the M101 cover of the heater elements/blower motor to the drum. Sears Parts direct SAYS they can supply that M101 part for $23!



He jerry-rigged the M101 part back in place and it has worked properly for about 6 months.



I havent yet bought the new part because I cant get my repairer out to put the new part in but it doesn't exactly look difficult. What i dont know is whether the broken screw mounts caused the uneven spin or did the uneven spin cause the broken screw mounts?? I wonder if I can rely on it working after the jerry-rigging to think that I can simply buy the part and put it in OR does anyone think that the M101 part will just break again if I do?

Thanks for that, yes, that was where I got the M101 part number. But I am suspicious as to why the repairer doesnt want to come out again and fix the problem if it is something to do with just replacing that part??

I however first reported to him a DHe error code, which in this machine means there are massive amounts of lint all over the inside of the machine and taking the white box-like structure out to clean it out is quite a major amount of work! (the machine is so badly designed, - without any lint filter, - that it needs re-doing every few years!) Maybe he, having sold me this unit, knows this!

While looking at my dishwasher (see other thread), I mentioned this uneven spinning on my LG washer/dryer and the error codes to the guy sent by Samsung for the dishwasher. (He is an LG repairer as well, though he did say his company prohibits doing extra work during one call out, - on another machine)

Apparently they are all thermistor error codes and a new thermistor only costs $18!

But he started laughing when I mentioned the problem and said (through the laughter) that ".......yes, all the screws come out of the shroud and fall down under the drum on these LG washer/dryers, don't they?"

I was unable to get him to take seriously the idea of putting them back in again, whether with some form of locking glue or not.

Anyone got any input on this please? Why is the idea of putting those screws back to correct this lousy design so funny? Is an LG washer/dryer so obviously at the end of its life when those screws start to work their way out? Or is this so obvious that it is part of the current LG class action?

I dont want to argue against myself but this is mystifying. I have done this repair before. I put all the screws back in (this was before the thermistor went south) The spin was fine before the looseness of the screws caused the whole shroud to come loose again, physically causing the thermistor to blow. It didn't occur to me to glue the screws in place on a unit that spreads all its internal components with lint over time. Meaning I may well in the future need to clean out the interior of the shroud again.

Meaning I shouldn't glue those screws in place when I replace the thermistor?? (which costs a whole four bucks to buy and 5-10 minutes to fit)

Or was he just laughing at how bad the design of this LG unit is? Yes, he knows someone can get the shroud to fit tight. Then in the future someone is going to have to heat up the screws to 500 degrees to get them off next time the lint needs cleaning out??

Is that what the current class action against LG for dryer problems is all about?

Could you use some sort of lock washer or maybe a flat washer/lockwasher combination? This link is to Home Depot for illustration. Ace Hardware lets one buy just a few.

That's an amazingly good idea! So long as the width of the washer doesn't make a loose-fitting screw in a worn hole even shorter in the hole than it is at present?
