add runner on top of carpeted stairs?

My stairs have a relatively light colored carpet that is hard to keep clean, with some signs of wear at the noses. Would installing a wool runner (darker color) on top of the existing carpet be a good solution to the problem, or would that be a mistake?

Thanks,

J.

for safety have it professionally recarpeted it in your favorite color but antistatic not wool to avoid static shock in low humidity conditions. it's probably not just the stairs you want carpeted, look around and take all the dimensions to the carpet store.

One way to add the carpet runner is to use quarter round to secure it into the 90 degree angles of the stairs. If you get a nice runner it can really accent the stairs. You may need to add a piece under the tread if you have an overhang below the tread where is is connected to the riser.
