"John and Carolyn Chekaway spent $400,000 of their life's savings building
their dream retirement home on 20 forested acres they bought near Lake
Michigan in 2002.
"Those are a handful of the home's 104 major building code violations that
state inspectors should have caught..."
At the demand of the state, the owners have spent $223,000 to verify their
claims, hiring 20 building and engineering experts and generating over 4,000
pages of documentation.
