Long answer made real short: Magnets on the flywheel, but before you tear things apart. I had a similar situation just this weekend. No spark. The problem turned out to be a stretched cable. The handle you must hold in to keep the mower running is connected to the ignition switch with a cable. This cable had stretched enough that with the handle held closed it still wouldn't close the ignition switch. Made an adjustment and it works fine.
