my sprinkler valve is stuck , due to age. how to turn it on?

i have an old house. I am trying to turn on a ( 4 ft. below the ground) sprinkler valve to water the lawn, with a forked "key". It it totally stuck , due to age, rust, etc. I don't want to force it and break it. any suggestions
