Can someone recommend a good basics book for african violets?

"The Miracle Houseplants", by Virginie and George Elbert. It's out of print, but I see a used copy available for five bucks at :

The book covers the gesneriad family, which includes african violets. Extremely thorough and informative. I've had several satisfactory dealings with Powells, and would have no hesitation about buying from them again.

There are also some growing tips at this site:

you're ever in upstate NY, I'd recommend a visit to the place. But, be forewarned that it's as dangerous as a casino is to a compulsive gambler.
