What are some smart ways to make a house more accessible for aging?

I've been looking at my parents' place with fresh eyes lately and realizing how many obstacles there are in a house that seemed fine ten years ago. It’s a 1970s build and the bathroom door is incredibly narrow, so I can alredy see that being a nightmare if they ever need a walker or even just more space to move around. I'm trying to figure out if it's better to just bite the bullet and widen the frames now or if there are simpler fixes that actualy work. We've already talked about doing the standard stuff like getting those taller toilets and maybe putting the washer and dryer on pedestals so they aren't constantly bending over to do laundry. I’m realy curious about door hardware too since my dad’s grip isn't what it used to be. Switching out all the old round knobs for levers seems like a quick win but I wonder if there are other little things that make a big difference day-to-day. Has anyone here dealt with retrofitting an older home for this kind of thing? I don't want to wait untill there's an actual emergency to start making these changes, but I also don't want to spend a fortune on things that aren't actually that helpful in the long run.

If the spring is too stiff, it’s still hard to operate even with a lever. A little dry lubricant in the mechanism can make a world of difference for someone with arthritis. One thing people frequently overlook is the direction the door swings, especally in tight bathrooms. If a parent falls inside a small bathroom, they can end up pinned against an inward-swinging door, making it impossible for you to get in to help. Reversing the door to **swing outward** into the hallway is a safety move that doesn't cost much but can save a life in an emergency. Barn doors can be a trap. If you get cheap hardware, that slab will feel like a ton of bricks once the track gets a little dusty.
